3 in 1 Asian Pear

Got my bare root stock dwarf tree in the mail today, from Peaceful Valley Farm in Grass Valley, Ca.  Three grafts are: 20th Century (green paint), Hosui (yellow), and Shinseiki (white).  A possible 4th graph (purple) wasn't labeled, but might be Chojuro.

Sugar Snap Pea

Planted 2 pea plants grown from Burpee seed.  Started 2 new plants from seed today, so I will put in new plants every 2 weeks for 12 weeks (3 months).

New dirt

Trying some expensive new dirt for the Earth Box: 420 potting soil, from California's "Emerald Triangle.". It cost $15.99 for 1.5 cu ft at Osh.

Buried clay pot watering

Trying out a method I read about in the book, "Gardening with less water," by David A. Bainbridge.  He uses buried clay pots, filled with water, to keep soil moist and reduce evaporation.  I am using this with directly sewn seeds from Burpee: Cook's custom BEET mix.

Seed package said 7-14 days till "seeds emerge" -- sure enough, it's been about 12 days till I got this microscopic sprout!

Artichoke

Transplanted 2 "green globe" heirloom artichokes into raised bed closest to the fense.  Tags on the plant say part-shade needed.  Purchased from Lowes.

Mint, beets, nasturtium

Starting spearmint seeds indoors today.  Planning to directly sow beets and nasturtium outside in the next week or two.

Lawn seed

Hand tilled a 9x6 ft patch of lawn in the back yard.  Planning to re seed lawn with this new bag of seed.

Soil Test

The back lawn is very dead despite the rain.  I did a soil test, which shows high alkaline, zero nitrogen, medium phosphorus, and medium potash.
